Coping with Eating Disorders – Support in Sheffield

Helping You Find Healing and Balance
Eating disorders can take a toll on your physical health, emotional well-being, and relationships. They often stem from complex emotional, social, and psychological factors. Whether you’re struggling with food, body image, or related concerns, we’re here to help you understand and address the challenges you’re facing.

Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders involve unhealthy relationships with food, eating, and body image that can impact your daily life and well-being. They are serious but treatable conditions, and each person’s experience is unique.

Types of Eating Disorders Include:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Characterised by extreme restriction of food intake, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. People with anorexia may experience severe weight loss, fatigue, and health complications.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: Involves cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours like purging (vomiting or excessive exercise) to avoid weight gain. It can lead to physical and emotional distress.
  • Binge Eating Disorder: Marked by recurring episodes of consuming large quantities of food, often accompanied by feelings of guilt, shame, or a loss of control. Unlike bulimia, compensatory behaviours are not present.
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): This condition involves avoiding certain foods or entire food groups due to sensory issues, fear of choking, or a lack of interest in eating, rather than concerns about weight.
  • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED): Encompasses eating disorders that don’t fit neatly into other categories but still significantly affect mental and physical health.
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder: While not solely an eating disorder, it often overlaps with them and involves an obsessive focus on perceived flaws in appearance, which can influence eating behaviours.

Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. Recognising that you may need help is a powerful first step.
